Gringo Living IN Mexico #22 The Lunch Break!

This was early on when we were first down there! We did our rotation of personnel and as usual I had been down there for about a month, it was a Sunday, and the city doesn't wake up til noon! We started at 7 am and there were a lot of first timers there at the time! Well they decided to go to lunch early, I told them there wasn't much open at 11 am on a Sunday, but was over ruled! LOL! This was always a problem down there with 4 people to a car getting everyone to agree on where to go to eat!… Continue

Gringo Living in Mexico #21 Car Washes!

This was (to me) the funniest thing I saw the whole time I was there! I've mentioned before that my boss there wasn't tight with the cash. We had three good size houses all with in a few blocks of one another. On Sundays we BBQ ed and partied. It didn't take long for the neighborhood kids to scope us out, and soon on Sundays these 2 boys around 14 years old would come by and wash our cars for us! The boss shot them a good chunk of change, for them it was mucho dinero! They would usually do 2 or… Continue

Gringo Living in Mexico #20 The Accident!

Well this was a very unpleasant experience, to say the least! I was at work and we needed some special stock, some Stainless Steel threaded rod. This was a challenge, but Terry rose to the occasion, knowing my way and around and my limited Spanglish, I set out looking for this hard to find item, and as usual they needed it now. I had a source that could point me in the right direction, so I drove over there and got my point across as to what I needed, my friend made a couple calls and found… Continue

Gringo Living in Mexico "A" Tribute to "Jack" My Friend!

I'm deviating from my normal Mexico post today! I found out yesterday a really good friend of mine passed away last Monday! Jack Bourgois! He was a friend here on this post and some of you might know him, I did since 5th grade. I talked to him recently and he said he was having major breathing problems, and on oxygen, but I never expected we'd lose him so soon! He was living in Florida and raising Parrots, what a neat thing to do! We used to get in a lot of trouble together as kids and I want… Continue

A Gringo Living In Mexico #19 My Cha Cha!

I spoke on an earlier post about a friend who got into some trouble, he went to Michigan and got stuck there, he had a girlfriend in Mexico and they were going to get married there, so he moved most of his things there, well anyway, she had to leave the home they were renting there and she came to stay with Patti and me until she could go back to her moms! Her and Patti got along well, and she was going thru some hard times to say the least, everyone new her and she was well liked. A guy was… Continue

Gringo Living in Mexico #18 A Touching Story!

If you've been keeping up then you know about the Cabin. A friend of mine got in to some trouble in Michigan and had a lot of stuff in Mexico, he was going to get married down there, and he got stuck in MI and couldn't return to Mexico, another story! I ended up with his things to watch over while he was gone. Well he had a nice printer there and I had a nice camera and was able to print some nice pics.

I had taken some pics. of the kids and the family at the Cabin, the folks next door who… Continue

Gringo Living in Mexico #17 The Smuggler!

We used to fly back and forth from Mexico to Detroit MI. Most guys would go about every 2 weeks but I would stay for 2 to 3 months. I got to know what we needed as far as food and other items we couldn't get down there! When I did go back I'd pick up things for my Mexican crew down there, it would help me form a relationship with them and they loved working for me! Simple things like cheap laser pointers, Detroit Tigers baseball caps, and other thing like that. But I also liked to cook and I… Continue

Gringo Living in Mexico #16 Driving is a Trip!

Learning to adapt down there, is in it self a learning experience. However learning to drive, is a whole different story. You have to consider the mix, it's in the mix! LOL! A song? Anyway there's the new middle class, they have the new cars and the new big trucks! If ( in their mind) they are important people they pretty much do what they want as far as speed goes, or using turn signals. Well that's kind of a joke anyway! Then there's the people who try and do it right, their pretty cool,… Continue

Gringo Living in Mexico #15 My Friend the Marketer!

I had a buddy come down and stay at the house with Patti and I. He was a marketing freak on E-Bay. I was into the internet but had zero experience with E-Bay. So I was interested in what he was up to, well believe it or not he sold cereal boxes, as in Kellogg s corn flakes? Ya me too! Well I guess the Wheaties boxes are worth some bucks to certain people (go figure, to much time on their hands types) some like double stamped boxes ( like coins) are worth some big bucks. So I would watch him in… Continue

Gringo Living in Mexico #14 Encounters with the Police Part 2

This really wasn't an encounter per say, but..... We used to go to a great place in Saltillo called the American Club, it was gringo themed and a lot of the Americans and Canooks, I mean our Canadian, friends used to hang out there. The made real American food, had American and Canadian Beers, And the best a couple of big screen TV's, and they were very casual and would usually put anything we asked for on TV ! Well on a Sunday during the hockey playoffs, it was the Wings (Detroit) vs. some… Continue

You mentioned "big gringo," I'd have to guess Cleaves or Lutz? And see if you can get Linda to post a blog or two. Her comments were pretty entertaining...LMAO!!!

Terry, Thanks for the info on Jack. We'll all miss him. He was a hell raiser, and great friend. I don't remember when he and I spoke last, but at that time he told me he had C.O.P.D. and was on oxygen, so I knew his days were numbered. I…

Gringo Living in Mexico #10 Christmas at the cabin

It really wasn't Christmas but 2 days after (we spent Christmas at the house in Monterrey) I thought it would be fun to go to the cabin so we planned on 4 days 3 nights. Of course I stopped and stocked up for the adventure. I even went to the blockbuster and rented some kids movies in Spanish, I could show them on my laptop to the kids. Well the first night it was a riot, about 12 kids came over and I made popcorn and had cokes for the kids. they'd never seen anything like it before. There's no…See More

Gringo Living in Mexico #9 Worker Story!

We had a wide variety of people from Detroit down there,to say the least, all ages, all sizes, and all individuals.I tried my best to get along with all of them, and being older than most of them it was kinda trying at times. Some of the fun times were in the (what we called the clown house) house Patti and I ended up sharing. There were a lot of rotations going on there, most would spend 2 weeks then go home and return. Since I didn't have much going on at home, and was still in my,bull in a china…See More
